Alex Carmichael: CEO of the Security Systems and Alarms Inspection Board

The Security Systems and Alarms Inspection Board (SSAIB) – the UK and Ireland-focused certification body now boasting some 1,700 registered firms on its books – will be returning to IFSEC International at London’s ExCeL venue. Resident on Stand F1375, the SSAIB’s staff will be led by new CEO Alex Carmichael, who took over the reins from Geoff Tate in March this year following his highly distinguished tenure as technical director at the British Security Industry Association.

SSAIB-registered companies include businesses providing electronic security, intruder alarms, security guarding and fire detection systems as well as services such as telecare monitoring solutions for the social alarms sector.

Throughout IFSEC International 2015 (which runs from 16-18 June), Carmichael and his team will be available to answer queries and discuss specific issues concerning both registered firms and their end users.

They’ll also be on-hand to explain the benefits of SSAIB’s accreditation services. These include the organisation’s latest UKAS accreditation against British Standard 102000 for Investigative Services, gained recently following the SSAIB’s work on pilot assessments with a number of companies operating in this arena.

Meanwhile, during IFSEC International 2015, SSAIB will also be supporting the ever-popular Engineers of Tomorrow challenge, the UK security skills competition designed for young engineers and apprentices which offers them an industry-wide opportunity to publicly demonstrate their achievements.

Support for industry standards

“Engineers of Tomorrow is one of the practical ways in which the SSAIB provides steadfast support for industry standards in the security, fire and other sectors,” explained Alex Carmichael. “In addition to one of the cash prizes, we’ll also be providing assessors to mark the candidates taking part in what is now the competition’s 15th year.”

Carmichael continued: “I’m looking forward to meeting with existing registered firms during the three-day show, as well as talking to those businesses considering the many benefits available from the certification services that SSAIB has to offer. We aim to provide guidance and encouragement to our certificated firms, as well as those considering certification, and our presence at IFSEC International 2015 is but one example of that ongoing mission.”

In addition to its product schemes, the SSAIB – founded back in 1994 and based in Tyne & Wear – also offers a range of management systems certification schemes, including certification to ISO 9001 Quality Management Systems certification and ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems.
