Fifth International Tall Building Fire Safety Conference focuses on issues arising from Grenfell Tower blaze

by Brian Sims

The rate and complexity of tall building construction is increasing worldwide, with cities forecast to house many more people in such structures as the years progress. In parallel, the tragedy that occurred at Grenfell Tower in London back in June, along with several other similar fire episodes in tall buildings around the world, has highlighted the need for a review of fire safety Best Practice, engineering and risk management.

With these factors in mind, the Fifth International Tall Building Fire Safety Conference will take place on 19-21 June 2018 at ExCeL, London alongside FIREX International. Supported by event organiser UBM, Day 1 at conference will consider design and fire engineering in tall buildings. Day 2 is set to focus on the management and insurance of fire risk in tall buildings, while the third and final day will evaluate Best Practice for firefighting in tall buildings.

Speakers already confirmed to make presentations include Justin Francis (Australia) who’ll be discussing his Winston Churchill Fellowship studies into tall building evacuation. Francis has travelled to eleven countries in a bid to examine current Best Practice. Also speaking is Merlyn Forrer (UK). Forrer will detail his research and studies into external thermal insulating cladding systems and fire performance tests.

Curtis Massey from the US is looking to detail current Best Practice regarding firefighting in high rise structures, while Stewart Kidd (also from the UK) will give a status update on tall building construction fire safety issues.

Conference director Russ Timpson commented: “This is a timely opportunity to bring the global fire safety community together and discuss a ‘way forward’ for tall building fire safety. With a great line-up of world class speakers, this should be a seminal event for those concerned with learning lessons from Grenfell Tower as well as other recent tall building fires.”

*All conference delegates will be granted VIP access to FIREX International and associated exhibitions running in co-location, among them IFSEC International and The Facilities Show
