Forensic liquid helps tackle night crime

by Andy Clutton

A forensic marking spray that helps police identify offenders is amongst a range of solutions being introduced by Cumbria Constabulary to protect the night-time economy.

It forms part of Operation Enhance, which introduces extra police patrols and additional resources to tackle antisocial behaviour and serious violence in identified hotspots across the county.

DeterTech SmartTag is a handheld spray canister containing SmartWater, a forensic marking liquid that shows up under UV light. It has a 100% conviction rate in contested court cases and stays on offenders’ skin and clothing for several weeks, irrefutably linking individuals back to the scene of their crimes. Only a speck is required to identify a code.

Police in Cumbria will, at their discretion, make up to 200 SmartTag canisters available to managers, owners and SIA-certified door staff. This is made possible with funding secured from the Home Office by Cumbria’s Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner.

Allerdale Neighbour Policing Inspector Pete Aiston said: “We want our communities to feel safe without risk of violence. Alongside the additional patrols, these solutions have already proven successful in supporting police, partners and local business owners to reduce the number of incidents.”
